Pediatrics

Pediatrics is a branch of medicine focused on the health and medical care of infants, children and adolescents. The term pediatrics is derived from Greek words pais (παῖς), child, and iatros (ἰατρός), doctor, healer. Pediatrics literally means the healing of children.

Pediatrics - Subjects and goals

With its focus on the physical, emotional and psychosocial development of children, the pediatric health care comprises:

  • prevention and counseling (regular comprehensive health check-ups, monitoring of a child’s overall health and development – weight and length / height, educating the parents on care, nutrition, sleep, playing and safety);
  • diagnostics and treatment (acute diseases, chronic organ dysfunctions, malignances, genetic, developmental and behavioural disorders and conditions, infections and injuries).

Pediatrics, therefore, deals not only with the treatment of ailing children, but also with the prevention, detection and treatment of various problems:

  • delays and disorders in psychomotor and speech development;
  • functional impairmens;
  • behavioural problems;
  • mental disorders (attention deficit, anxiety, depression);
  • socially determined stressors etc.

A comprehensive pediatric approach strives to recognize all the factors that might influence the survival, quality of life and prevention of disability occurrence by:

  • lowering the mortality rate of infants and children;
  • controlling the spread of infectious diseases;
  • promoting a healthy lifestyle for a long disease-free life;
  • helping manage chronic conditions of children and adolescents.

When should I take my child to a pediatrician?

In an emergency, when a child falls ill, they should be taken to a pediatrician immediately. To ensure effective treatment, it is imperative to follow the proscribed therapy and the advice of the ordering pediatrician.

Regular health check-ups are important in order to ensure the normal growth and development of the child. Regular pediatric check-ups should start from birth and continue up to early adulthood (18 years).

Appointment schedule

It is necessary to schedule an initial examination within the first month to ensure the newborn is provided with full medical care and support.

This is when measurements (weight, length, head circumference) and progress evaluation (nutrition quality, weight gain, sleep, stool) take place. The pediatrician will also examine vital signs (heartbeat, breathing and temperature), as well as the baby’s skin, eyes, ears and reflexes (to assess neural and muscular health).

The initial, comprehensive clinical examination is especially important because it can detect possible health issues or anomalies which might require early treatment. This is also when the parents are given invaluable advice on care, nutrition, sleep and maintaining hygiene of their newborn, as well as reccomendations on other important aspects of childcare to facilitate their first days of parenthood which are challenging enough.

The second month is the time for vaccination (DTP, polio, Hib, pneumococcal), the third month is for revaccination. The initial hip ultrasound is performed within the same period.

During the fourth and fifth month non-breast milk nutrition is introduced, regarding which the parents can hear important information and recommendations from the pediatrician. The sixth month is when the comprehensive health check-up, complete blood count and the follow-up hip ultrasound are performed.

Months nine through twelve is the time for a repeat comprehensive health check-up, including a dental check-up. The dental check-up should take place immediately after the first incisors have appeared, and repeated regularly every three to six months.

The period between twelve and eighteen months is when the infant is given the MMR vaccine that protects them from measles, mumps, and rubella. In the following years, the comprehensive health check-up is repeated annualy.

Directly before enrolling in school another mandatory comprehensive health check-up takes place. Besides a pediatric examination, the pre-school examination includes visits to the ophthalmologist, physiatrist, speech and language therapist and stomatologist.

During the final elementary school year (14 years old) the child is revaccinated for tetanus and diphtheria.

Pediatrics and other medical fields

A multidiciplinary approach is necessary when dealing with specific and/or associated diseases and conditions in children, as well as concerning comprehensive health check-ups.

In an effort to help children with various health issues or during their preparation for school, pediatricians cooperate with other medical specialists:

Pediatrics covers a wide range of issues concerning the overall health and development of children. This makes the cooperation with other medical fields crucial.
