Infectology: What is it and what does it focus on?

Infectology is a branch of medicine focusing on the prevention, diagnostics and treatment of infectious diseases caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms and parasites. These diseases may affect various organs and organ systems, and they are often transmitted through contact with infected individuals, contaminated objects, food, water or through vectors such as insects.

Our infectologist, Prof. Mijomir Pelemiš, MD, PhD, one of the leading experts in the area of infectology, emphasises the importance of timely diagnostics and efficient treatment in the fight against infectious diseases. Not only does infectology treat acute infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis and tropical diseases, but it is also concerned with the prevention and control of the spread of infections within a community and a hospital environment.

When should you address an infectologist?

The symptoms which may indicate the need for an examination by an infectologist include the following:

High fever lasting more than a few days.
Severe headache accompanied by a stiff neck (a possible sign of meningitis).
Prolonged diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain.
Inexplicable skin rash or changes in the mucosa.
Symptoms of respiratory infections such as cough, chest pain and laboured breathing .
Infections of sores that do not heal or are accompanied by redness, swelling and pus discharge.
Symptoms which indicate possible sexually transmitted infections, such as unusual discharge or painful urination.

I had pain in the thumbs of both hands and in my right shoulder for several months, and I felt completely drained. I was treated with medication and physical therapy by several physiatrists and rheumatologists, but the pain did not subside. Then I consulted Professor Damjanov, who examined me and determined that I had swelling and inflammation in both shoulders, as well as skin thickening and inflammation in both hands. After an ultrasound examination and lab tests, the Professor’s suspicion was confirmed — I had an autoimmune disease: vasculitis. I was prescribed medication, and I soon started feeling much better. I feel like a new person! The inflammation is gone, and the Professor now plans to gradually discontinue my treatment altogether. I’m deeply grateful to Professor Damjanov for identifying the true cause of my condition and prescribing the right treatment.

I had constant pain in my lower back. Physiatrists treated me for sciatica using physical therapy for years, but to no avail — I wasn’t feeling better at all. Then I made an appointment with Prof. Damjanov, who finally discovered the true cause of my condition. He diagnosed me with rheumatic inflammation of the spine — spondyloarthritis. He explained that this disease could only be treated with a biological drug, which I received through the Republic Health Insurance Fund. Since starting this therapy, I’ve been pain-free and able to live and work normally. I am deeply grateful to Professor Damjanov.

I had severe pain in my left arm. I couldn’t bend it or raise it. I made an appointment with Professor Damjanov, and based on a physical and ultrasound examination, he discovered inflammation, a rupture, and fibroses in several places. He gave me an injection and advised me on what I should and shouldn’t do during recovery. After that, the pain stopped, and I now function normally.

I visited Professor Damjanov while he was working at the Institute. I suffered from constant pain in my feet — literally on a daily basis. In addition to the pain in my feet, which was the most severe, all my muscle attachments also ached. None of the painkillers helped, and neither physiatrists nor orthopaedists could figure out what the issue was. Professor Damjanov immediately realised that I had hypermobile joint syndrome and told me I had to stop doing aerobics. He gave me advice on which activities are suitable for me, and I’ve followed it for years. The pain is now much less intense and far less frequent — and I no longer need any medication. An exceptional diagnostician.

Professor Damjanov saved my life. I was in great pain and had difficulty moving. During an ultrasound examination, the professor saw that the cup of my hip had ruptured and that there was an unusual mass next to it. My hip was operated on, and the benign tumour was removed. However, about ten days after the operation, my general health worsened. I had no energy at all, and my legs were swollen — the swelling would not go down. None of the specialists could identify the cause. Then I was examined by Professor Damjanov, who made the correct diagnosis, admitted me to hospital, and immediately started treatment. Had my pseudomembranous colitis remained undiagnosed, I would likely have died within a day or two. I am eternally grateful to him.
