Infectology

Infectology: What is it and what does it focus on?

Infectology is a branch of medicine focusing on the prevention, diagnostics and treatment of infectious diseases caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms and parasites. These diseases may affect various organs and organ systems, and they are often transmitted through contact with infected individuals, contaminated objects, food, water or through vectors such as insects.

Our infectologist, Prof. Mijomir Pelemiš, MD, PhD, one of the leading experts in the area of infectology, emphasises the importance of timely diagnostics and efficient treatment in the fight against infectious diseases. Not only does infectology treat acute infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis and tropical diseases, but it is also concerned with the prevention and control of the spread of infections within a community and a hospital environment.

When should you address an infectologist?

The symptoms which may indicate the need for an examination by an infectologist include the following:

  • High fever lasting more than a few days.
  • Severe headache accompanied by a stiff neck (a possible sign of meningitis).
  • Prolonged diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain.
  • Inexplicable skin rash or changes in the mucosa.
  • Symptoms of respiratory infections such as cough, chest pain and laboured breathing .
  • Infections of sores that do not heal or are accompanied by redness, swelling and pus discharge.
  • Symptoms which indicate possible sexually transmitted infections, such as unusual discharge or painful urination.

Infectology and preventive medicine

Apart from treatment, infectologists play a crucial part in the education of patients on prevention measures. Vaccination, good hygiene and safe eating and travelling habits are the basic pillars of protection from infections.
