DXA analysis

DXA analysis is a software-managed assessment of bone density and structure (microarchitecture) and body composition (proportion of fat and lean muscle mass) using a sophisticated densitometer GE Healthcare Lunar Prodigy.

The terms DXA and DEXA are used interchangeably and are abbreviations for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. This complex designation refers to the measurement of bone mineral density by means of two angled X-ray beams with different energy levels.

What are the uses of DXA analysis?

The main focus of DXA scanning is a general measurement of bone density and bone microarchitecture. This measurement is used to diagnose and monitor bone density and structure. Based on the results, the machine calculates the risk of bone fractures.

DXA analysis, being a computer-managed procedure, is also useful for:

  • lumbosacral spine imaging to assess vertebral height;
  • establishing muscle mass index;
  • assessing the percentage and location of visceral fat (the fat stored around vital organs).

Besides these functions, DXA analysis is very helpful in prescribing dietotherapy in patients with eating disorders and related illnesses. The results may also be used to assess overall metabolic health, especially in sports medicine and planning of diet and exercise programs.

This patented technology enables detailed analysis of body composition and metabolism, including muscle mass, body mass index and body fat percentage. These data are crucial in creating the abovementioned adaptive diet and exercise plans. Such plans optimize the patient’s health and contribute to the overall wellbeing of their organism.

How reliable and safe is the DXA analysis?

DXA analysis is considered to be very reliable and suitable for all patients (including women who intend to get pregnant), because it is characterized by:

  • very high degree of measurement precision and result accuracy;
  • minimal invasiveness;
  • very low doses of radiation;
  • the lowest possible health risk;
  • painless, comfortable and quick scanning procedure, with no side effects.

DXA GE Healthcare Lunar Prodigy is a high-tech device with advanced features, absolutely precise, efficient and safe. These claims are particularly supported by its functions and applications which:

  • shorten the scanning time;
  • warn of potential errors during scanning.

The exceptional performance of this device is crucial in early diagnostics of osteoporosis and in comprehensive health assessment. This results not only in the highest efficiency levels but in maximum comfort for the patient as well.
