Dr. Marko Banović is a specialist in internal medicine and a subspecialist in cardiology. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade and completed his mandatory medical internship at the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases “Dedinje”. He obtained his Master’s degree in 2008 with a thesis on “One-Year Prognosis of Patients with Acute Heart Failure” and earned his PhD in 2012 with a thesis on “The Importance of Doppler Echocardiographic Parameters of the Left Ventricle in Assessing the Severity of Aortic Stenosis and Early Prognosis of Disease Progression”. The same year, he specialized in cardiology, and in 2014, he was appointed as a clinical assistant in the Department of Internal Medicine. He earned his subspecialty in cardiology in 2017 and was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Medicine in 2021.

Since 2006, he has been employed at the Clinic for Cardiology at the University Clinical Center of Serbia. He is a member of the Serbian Medical Society, the Association of Cardiologists of Serbia, the European Society of Cardiology, and the American College of Cardiology. He serves on the editorial boards of three esteemed international cardiology journals: “Heart Health Journal”, “Cardiometry Journal”, and “Annals of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Diseases”. He has participated in numerous congresses and symposiums in Serbia, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and other European countries.

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT

Dr. Banović possesses extensive experience in echocardiography, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and interventional cardiology. His primary area of interest is aortic valve stenosis. Among his numerous research works is the “Avatar” study, which he authored and led. This study, presented at the American Heart Association congress, aims to address the justification and benefits of surgical aortic valve replacement in asymptomatic patients with severe aortic stenosis and preserved left ventricular function.

Dr. Banović frequently emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis of heart diseases and is a strong advocate for research into heart disease treatment with stem cells. Serbia is the second country in the world to apply this method of heart treatment with second-generation stem cells, and Dr. Banović was a member of the team for this project, which was overseen by the Mayo Clinic in the United States.
